NOVEMBER 16 TRY OUTS TICKETS
Do you enjoy joy? Comedy? Debating (but in a fun way)? Tears of laughter? Incisive, hilarious commentary on the law and the legal profession? Self-deprecating jokes? Unsuccessful attempts at the aforesaid by your colleagues? Poking fun at yourselves, your colleagues, your friends, and your “friends” [said with the passive-aggressive intonation of an irate lawyer in Chambers]? And other such generally positive things you couldn’t possibly dislike in the abstract?
Give up control of your minds, then, because you are cordially invited to attend the BGuiled Debate Try-Outs!
UBC Law alumni may remember the Robert H. Guile, K.C. Memorial Debate as a legal comedy event hosted at the law school for many years. Traditionally featuring law students as debaters arguing for or against an assigned maxim, and adjudicated by an esteemed panel of professors, lawyers, and judges, the Debate emphasized the infusion of joy and hilarity into the otherwise dry and serious subject of law.
Since 2018, with the resounding support of friends and family of Robert H. Guile K.C., the BGuiled Debate Society has hosted a spin-off from that beloved tradition: the BGuiled Debate! The BGuiled Debate is open to participants from the British Columbia legal community, as well as to students still in law school.
The BGuiled Debate Try-Outs will take place on November 16, 2023, at the Beaumont Studios, located at 316 West 5th Avenue Vancouver, BC.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for general merriment. Debate speeches start at 7:30 p.m. There will be drinks at the bar (cash and etransfer only) for purchase. Tickets can be purchased here.
The courageous debaters will argue, in five minute speeches, for or against the maxim:
“BE IT RESOLVED THAT ONE WHO DOES WRONG WHEN DRUNK MUST BE PUNISHED WHEN SOBER"
(or, for those that can only speak Latin, "Nescis Quomodo Latine Loqui").
The Tryouts will be adjudicated by an expert panel of judges culled from our friend group that we think look like debate judges.
Tickets are $20 each for the Tryouts, or $10 for current law students (but get more expensive day of), and can be purchased at: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/2023-bguiled-debate-tryouts-tickets-716592195547?aff=oddtdtcreator
